Shenoute

Shenoute
(d. c. 450)
   Order Consolidator.
Shenoute was a nephew of Pgôl who had founded a monastery based on the Rule of St pachomius, near Schag, Egypt. Under his leadership, the community greatly expanded. He was highly authoritarian by temperament and he established the monastery on a sound organisational basis. Many of his writings survive in their original Coptic. He accompanied cyril of alexandria to the Council of Ephesus in 431 where he proved to be a determined opponent of the teachings of nestorius. He is venerated as a saint in the Coptic Church.
